The Benefits of Improving your Communication Skills

The ability to communicate effectively is a critical skill in today’s workplace. Writing and speaking are both essential.

How can you learn what you need to know to get where you want to go?

In this episode Beverly talks with Lori Stern. She’s a CPA and Risk Management professional with experience in insurance, banking and real estate.

Lori is an advocate for Toastmasters, where she and Beverly met. She shares how presenting and then facilitating meetings helped her improve her communication skills. Additionally, she credits her on-going participation for increased confidence and the ability to speak and present well.

Beverly and Lori also discuss:

  • How to prepare formal presentations.
  • Learning how to think quickly and speak on a variety of topics.
  • How you gain confidence from speaking and how it impacts all areas of life.
  • Toastmasters clubs and how they meet (in person, virtual)
  • How to find a club in your area and how to start one.
  • The ways that Toastmasters (and other virtual meetings) are also networking opportunities.

The ability to get feedback is one of the best ways to improve your skills. Beverly and Lori both advocate for finding a way to get feedback from people who are genuinely interested in helping you improve.

You can check out different club chapters to find the one that “fits” you. Since meetings are virtual, you aren’t limited by geography. If you’re looking to expand your connections or find a job while improving your skills, you can find the environment that suits you best.

There are leadership opportunities too. Lori outlines the 7 roles in each chapter. Each role contributes to the process of each meeting. It’s also a chance for you to grow your leadership skills.

They also cover:

  • Speaking best practices
  • The best way to improve your presentations
  • How to organize your speech
  • Gaining confidence in your abilities

Being a confident speaker and presenter will help you in all areas of life. It will help when you interview, provide feedback to your team, or share at a faith-based group. It can also help you be a better write and more thoughtful in how you share your knowledge with others.
